Extruders

3D printers can be modified with different types of extruders to achieve larger prints, prints with different materials, and other specialty types of prints.

 

Lulzbot TAZ MOARstruder

The Lulzbot TAZ MOARstruder is a toolhead modification compatible with Lulzbot TAZ branded 3D printers. This modification allows for the 3D printer to extrude plastic using thicker layers (greater layer height) and print large prints that would otherwise would take several days to print.

 

While we recommend keeping prints to under 8 hours to be supported in the Makers Lab, if your print estimate surpasses 8 hours even at the lowest resolution and highest speed settings in Cura, then the MOARstruder may be an option for you. Please email makerslab@ucsf.edu to schedule time.

Lulzbot TAZ Dualextruder v3

The Lulzbot TAZ Dualextruder v3 is a toolhead modification compatible with Lulzbot TAZ branded 3D printers. This modification allows for the 3D printer to print using two nozzles instead of one, and simultaneously, two different types of filament at once!

The Dualextruder is currently installed on the Lulzbot TAZ 6. Read more about the TAZ 6 here.

The Dualextruder is capable of 3D printing dual-color prints, as well as a prints requiring dissolvable support structures. It can print with a majority of PLA plastics and with water-soluble filament, like PVA, that dissolves and separates in water. Printing with dissolvable support structures is a great solution for 3D printing complex models, such as protein structures, that would otherwise require a lot of support material to remove.
