Import Multiple Choice Questions into a Question Bank

When creating a quiz in the CLE, it is recommended to have your questions and answers written out and ready prior to entering them into a question bank. If you have multiple choice questions written in a Word document, you have the option of manually entering them individually into the question bank or importing them all at once.

To import multiple choice questions all at once, follow the instructions below.

Part 1: Format the questions

Multiple choice questions must be formatted in a specific way for the import function to be successful.

On the first line, write the question. Directly below the question, with no extra lines, add the answer options formatted with capital letters and a period. After the answer options have been written on each subsequent line, the correct answer option must be written on the next line as such: ANSWER: X. See below for an example:

A. Is it this one?
B. Maybe this answer?
C. Possibly this one?
D. Must be this one!

Notice that there are no line breaks in between the question, the answer options, and the answer. You can add a line break between each question set. See below for an example.

What is the correct answer to this question?
A. Is it this one?
B. Maybe this answer?
C. Possibly this one?
D. Must be this one!

How many bones are there in the human body?
A. 183
B. 195
C. 206
D. 214

Part 2: Save your file and import to the CLE

Once you have finished formatting the multiple choice questions in your word document, the file must be saved as a plain text file. Follow these steps:

  1. From your word document, select ‘File’ then ‘Save As…’
  2. Give your document a name and choose where to save the file (desktop, downloads, etc.)
  3. Next to File Format, select the drop down arrow, choose Plain Text (.txt)
  4. Select save to see a pop up window appear. Under text encoding, select Other encoding and then select Unicode (UTF-8). Select 'OK' to finish saving your file.

Now that the questions and the word file have been properly formatted and your document has been saved, you can import the questions to a question bank in the CLE. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the course where you want to import the questions
  2. From the course main page, select the gear icon on the top right then select ‘More…’
  3. At the bottom of the page, next to Question Bank, select 'Import'
  4. Under the File Format section, select ‘Aiken’. Under the Import questions from file section, select ‘Choose a file’ then select the file that was saved as a plain text (.txt) file. Towards the bottom of the page, select 'Import'
  5. You should see a screen that confirms that the questions were successfully imported. Select 'Continue' to go to the question bank to see the questions successful_import.png qs_in_qb.png
